Mediterranea has never tested its products on animals, and its products do not contain ingredients tested on animals. Under the European Cosmetics Regulation, any cosmetic product created after 2013 cannot in any way support animal testing, whether or not the packaging displays a “cruelty-free” certification. Since animal testing is prohibited by law, we do not use a cruelty-free label.
No, the ingredients used are generally not of animal origin, but are either natural or synthetic.

Vegan cosmetics are products that do not contain ingredients derived from animals or substances produced by animals, such as milk, honey, or snail mucin.
Most of the products in our range are vegan, but there may be some exceptions. However, our products do not have Vegan certification.

According to AIC, the Italian Coeliac Association, all cosmetics, including lipstick and lip balm, should not pose a risk for people with coeliac disease and can be used, as a cosmetic product is a mixture of substances that acts exclusively on the surface layers of the skin.
Some products may contain ingredients that include gluten, such as wheat, so it is preferable to assess each product on a case-by-case basis.

Nickel is a metal. It is not an ingredient that is intentionally added to cosmetic products, but for manufacturing reasons, possible traces of nickel are considered technically unavoidable.
Its presence is permitted by law and it would therefore be incorrect to indicate “Nickel Free”, while it is correct to indicate “Nickel Tested”.
It is common practice to accompany the wording “Nickel Tested” with the maximum acceptable threshold, which is 1 ppm.
Below are the lines tested for the presence of nickel, with values below 1 ppm, and therefore indicated in cases of confirmed allergy to this metal:
- PHARMA line, excluding CellZero Draining Mud
- SUN/AFTER SUN line
- M-BABY BIO line
- SOS Sanitising products: hand sanitiser, sanitising liquid soap, sanitising spray
- TERME line, excluding Terme Draining Mud
- BIO NATURA line
In general, we do not carry out tests to detect heavy metals such as titanium, lead, and others in our products.
On some product lines, nickel testing is carried out to ensure that the concentration is below 1 ppm.
Parabens are substances used to preserve cosmetic products.
Although they are safe ingredients and authorised by cosmetic legislation, Mediterranea Cosmetics has chosen not to use them in its formulations because they have been the subject of debate and criticism.
Mediterranea cosmetics do not have an expiry date, as they have a shelf life of more than 30 months from the date of production. It is therefore not mandatory to indicate an expiry date.
However, it is necessary to indicate the period within which the product should be used after first opening, known as the Period After Opening, or PAO.
The PAO indicates the number of months within which the opened cosmetic product can be used safely. Contact with the external environment may, over time, alter the characteristics of the product, for example by changing its colour, properties, or consistency, or by encouraging bacterial contamination.
The PAO is indicated in all European Union countries with the same symbol: an open jar, shown both on the primary container, which is in direct contact with the cosmetic product, and, where applicable, on the outer box.
The open jar symbol, or the area next to it, shows the product’s duration after opening in months, written as a number followed by the letter “M”.
Mediterranea Cosmetics products are non-comedogenic. The ingredients are combined at suitable concentrations to help avoid this unwanted effect.
The key is to know your skin type — normal, dry, sensitive, combination, or oily — and choose the most suitable product to ensure good absorption and a pleasant feel on the skin.
For people with thyroid conditions, potential concerns are linked to the possible presence of iodine in cosmetics, as this could interfere.
Iodine has not been intentionally added to the products in our range. However, it may be present in traces in some ingredients.

A woman’s body undergoes many changes during pregnancy, so it is important to take the right precautions and seek medical advice in case of doubt.
For the face, we can recommend using any product in our range, preferably choosing natural lines with ingredients that have a high skin-tolerability profile, such as Vitamin C+ or Bio Natura.
For the body, products targeting the appearance of cellulite, products with essential oils, and other more intensive substances should be avoided.
One body cream we can recommend is Pharma Breast Body Cream, suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Today, mineral, or physical, filters are often spoken about very positively, while chemical filters are often viewed negatively because “chemistry” tends to be perceived in a negative way.
It would actually be more accurate to speak of inorganic filters, also known as physical or mineral filters, and organic filters, also known as chemical filters, because both act chemically.
Like all substances, they have pros and cons. Consumers can feel reassured, however, because the use of these substances is regulated, and the SCCS, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety of the European Union, establishes which ingredients and concentrations are safe.
This means that products that are dangerous to humans cannot be placed on the market.
Mineral filters reflect the sun’s rays, need to be applied several times, and leave a white cast on the skin. Chemical filters absorb the energy of radiation and then release it in the form of heat, and they are easy to apply.
Mediterranea has chosen to use the best combination of sun filters in order to offer products that are effective, safe, and pleasant on the skin.
Most of the formulas contain chemical filters. The protection system is stable and complete, with UVA-UVB filters that provide broad-spectrum coverage.
A particularly innovative formulation concept has been adopted, making it possible to achieve sun protection factors, including the highest ones, with a minimal amount of sun filters.
